Strange Particles Bio

Strange Particles is a band that delves into sound design and arrangement. The pieces are soundscapes along a standard song arrangement blending elements of ambient, downtempo and indie rock arrangement. The band is composed of a duo - Alfred Smith and Barbara Sanchez.

All arrangements are done electronically between 2 machines including several guitars, theramin, bass, drum machine and any VST plug-in we can get our hands on.

There are layers upon layers of instruments and textures building arrangements as a soundtrack. The idea is to envision an aural soundtrack to a film that only exists in the listener's mind. Much like a good book must be digested and associated with condition s that lead the mind to see the story, so does the music behind Strange Particles. All of this while retaining an indie feel. It's like listening to an old record and feeling as if it was recorded far away and the music came from distant lands. Under-produced with a raw, gritty sound, Strange Particles reflects that feeling.

Strange Particles has performed throughout the Miami | Ft. Lauderdale area and has worked on theatrical soundtracks for local stage work including the Juggernaut Theatre's work entitled "Urban Society Blues".

Alfred Smith

Alfred Smith

Alfred Smith is a musician from South Florida that started Strange Particles in the summer of 2001. He was raised from a Cajun-Cuban background and developed an ear for music at an early age listening to his grandmother and grandfather sing Cuban Folk duets by piano for early Saturday family get-togethers. While attending Florida International University he was a member of various prog-rock/metal bands playing bass but shortly after developed an interest in a wide variety of instruments particularly in the guitar and the sounds it could create looping various pedals. With the dawn of IDM music being spearheaded in the Miami underground, Alfred joined the ranks under 8(8) Symmetry while running an indie internet radio station named Radio Event Horizon. While studying Communications, he developed a background in Pro-Audio and recorded Strange Particles I using an array of virtual instruments while incorporating guitars and bass. Tracks were show-cased at Black Market Baby (hosted at SoHo Lounge, Miami) and the S.L.A.M. events (hosted at Power Studios, Miami). Since then he has continued to experiment with different sounds and instruments such as the thermin, banjo and keyboards.
